As an autistic person I do follow scripts. At work it’s the NT “Hi, how are you?” I reply “Hi, good thanks,” or some very similar variation. What flips my script is when they use my name. “Hi Sara…” and I am left with a long processing time trying to remember the person’s name. This can be someone I work with many times daily, and I still need a few extra seconds processing time. We are not afforded this as we pass through the halls. Usually by the time they are long gone I remember. To holler back would be very awkward. So, I stick with my same script. This happens with goodbyes at work too. It certainly reminds me that I am still autistic, in case I forgot for a moment. Haha. The only thing that saves me is if I see the person coming, get their name in my head, then beat them to the punch, sotospeak, by saying “Hi Name” first. NT love it when you remember their name BTW.
